Felt is a textile material that is produced by matting, condensing, and pressing fibres together. It is a nonwoven thick fabric made by different types of fibres using techniques that involve heat, moisture, and pressure. Layers of fibres are kept together to achieve the wanted thickness and then they are matted/entangled/interlocked to make the fabric you call ‘felt’. It may be soft and supple or tough and coarse according to its purpose and the way it is made – through artisanal techniques or industrial ones.
